Sand Racing Report 6th August 2016

English rider Dan Winterton came to Guernsey to celebrate his birthday & to do some racing on Vazon bay but would be going home with a crown on his head as not only winning the first 2 slider championship races he also came away with the title of King of the Beach in winning the scratch race with that trophy name. It was not easy going as he had to defend from local star Anthony Bougourd and another English rider Andrew Whitaker who having blown the motor on his bike during practice was able to continue racing as, Dave Cleal had to abandon any hopes of racing with a knee injury, so quickly loaned Andrew his bike. Rob Teed could not match the speed of these 3 riders but was still chasing hard to gain maximum points whilst dad Colin still enjoys his racing at the back of the field, at least these riders provided some thrilling racing . This could not be said for the motocross class which was down to just 3 riders (mainly due to a clashing practice event at Pleinmont) so the results were a forgone conclusion as each rider is at a different level of performance. The junior/intermediate class proved to be more interesting to watch as it now has become very close for the riders behind the leading youngster Dan Clarke, though Ben Le Provost took three 2nd places he now has to watch out for the Ogier siblings as they gain more experience on their slider bikes so this has pushed Kieren Bennett back a little though it was good to see that when he took a tumble in the slip bend without any help from the marshals he picked the bike up, restarted & continued racing. Unfortunately Erin Ogier also took a tumble, in the 4th race this time in the wet bend which required a trip to hospital due to a knee injury, just hope this not dent her growing riding confidence. Making his debut in this class was Patrick Le Friec who is just waiting for the next meeting so that he can continue to enjoy himself. Gemma Le Page always seemed to get the better start in the cadet’s race but Sam Walker would make uptime on each lap so he took all race wins.

With a couple of cars missing it was decided to combine both classes into one race & increasing the lap distance from 6 to 8 laps& in their first race only the saloons completed the full race distance as each of the racing cars pulled back into the pits with various problems, Gary-hand injury, Billy-Electronics & Clint-puncture.  As like the previous meeting the saloons proved to be very competitive with Jonathan Robilliard taking the class wins whilst 2nd& 3rd place’s was hotly disputed between a number of drivers, luckily there were no serious comings together though a few panels may need a bit of hammer work. Youngest car driver Matthew Board took his 2nd handicap trophy win from a very tight 2nd place which saw 3 cars cross the finish line almost side to side but result went to Eric Trump, from Neil Bourgaize& 4th was Paul Helyer.
