SANDRACING REPORT 12/06/2010
The supporting cast to the main event at the 5th running of the Condor Ferries Sand Ace meeting consisted of just 3 junior bike riders & 7cars. In the juniors we were missing the Rive twins as their father was competing on the Bubblegum rally so was not there to attend their bikes, this left Billy Russell to win all 5 championship races from Josh Lambourne who look all 2nd places whilst Jarod Carrington took all 3rd spots & with special trophies on offer for this meeting the same positions applied.
Mark Ozanne was chased hard by Simon Carre in the racing car class with both drivers claiming 2 championship wins though Simon was fortunate to take his 2 when Mark first suffered failed gear linkage then water in the electrics which effected the v-tec engine, but it was Simon who suffered the worst problem when he holed the sump on his car after taking a bad landing going through the dip on the entrance to the car corner on the slip bend. In the saloons Ricky Le Cheminant gained maximum points as class leader John Dean was not racing in the class 1400-1800 production whilst Mick Bichard came second. In the large class there was the usual battle between Shaun Leigh & Eric Trump, they were joined by newcomer Karl West driving the largest production car seen on the sands, an automatic Lexus 9400 with a 4000cc motor which was getting gradually fastest as the races went on.
For those that did not read the excellent Guernsey Press Report I’ll quickly point out that from the very 1st heat it was obvious that there was only going to be one contender for the SandAce title & that was Mitch Godden who out rode every one else, the only likely opponent was Dan Winterton but as these two were not due to race each other to the 5th round of heats which were cancelled we had to wait to the A final to see these two in action against each other & once again Mitch showed his superior riding ability. Unfortunately top local rider Anthony Queripel was still not fit enough to ride so local interest was provided by Anthony Bougourd, Simon Cohu, Dave Cleal, Jon le Page & Robert Teed with Jon taking the winners position in the B final, a fine performance after his recent accident before announcing his retirement from racingPaul Stanford
