SANDRACING REPORT 14/03/2009

I’m not sure if Winter has ended & Spring has yet begun but Vazon saw the return of the Sandrace competitors for a very early start to the 2009 season. There was a low turnout due either to competitors not being ready in time or the fact that they though it would be too cold for an afternoon on the beach & a clashing Moto X Event. A bright sunny day brought a sprinkling of spectators to get their fix of motorsport.

So on to the action, with only 7 bikes competitors present both classes ran together with reigning 500 champion Anthony Queripel taking 5 wins out of a possible7 only dropping out of the Committee Cup & Final scratch races leaving Dave Cleal to take the Committee cup win & Mike Clarke the scratch race. Anthony claimed the first silverware of the season ironically for the Silver Goblet Trophy. Colin Teed rode well to gain 1 2nd spot & 5 3rd places whilst Darren Clarke trying not to fall off of his bike this year having swapped bikes for one race with his father managed to put the same stunt as his father did last year by pulling a wheelie off the start line which of course through him to the ground. In the 250 class John Damarell took a maximum 5 wins whist Eddie Goracy was saving his energy to tackle the motor bike trial being held the next day.

Only 3 racing cars appeared but it was only Ricky Le Cheminant that kept his single seater Kawasaki running all afternoon having beefed up the drive shafts after failures last season, for 3 races he was allowed to go out on his own to gain for experience in handling this car. Paul Morgan appeared with his home built special again strengthen from last year but a burst oil pipe in the second race saw the end of his day. The 3rs driver was Simon Carre in the Z-Bird but a mixture on electrical & fuel problems meant he never completed any race; a new ECU will be fitted before its next outing.

11 Saloons made it to the beach but as they are spread out over at least 5 classes there was very little competition. Car Captain Peter Jory was out in his Winter autotest 1400 Honda Civic whist newcomer Lisa Robilliard in a 1300 Micra was the only other car in the small production class, Paul Stanford had John Dean as

competition in the middle production class till the clutch went in John’s car whilst the large class saw Shaun Leigh out with the Cavalier again whilst June Ozanne has taken over the rainbow coloured Prelude. The Modified saw Steve Marquis out in a Ford Escort painted in his usual Blue whist Alison Baudains was now driving the resprayed 2200cc Prelude, That just leaves Mark Ozanne out in the Subaru WRX which is still for sale, John Le Page in the Production 4 wheel drive Audi & Colin Bridle with the Skoda Special which suffered electrical problems. Peter Jory took the car competitors first trophy of the year winning the Martel Handicap Trophy.
